Mental Health Awareness Training

Course overview

The half-day Mental Health Awareness training is designed to introduce people to the topic of mental wellbeing, it raises awareness of mental health problems and helps reduce the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health problems.

The course will teach participants to quickly identify someone who may be experiencing mental health problems and the simple things they can do every day to proactively support themselves, friends and colleagues, both in and out of the workplace.


Target Group

The course is designed for anybody working in all types of settings where they may have contact with people experiencing mental health problems.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of the training the participant will be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by the term mental health and mental illness
  • Identify the most common types of mental illness
  • Recognise some of the signs and symptoms of the most common types of mental illnesses
  • Know how to manage some of the most common types of mental health illness
  • Challenge some of the stereotypes and stigma associated with the term mental illness
  • Respond appropriately to a mental health crisis
  • Understand how to look after their own and others' mental wellbeing
  • Develop an awareness of sources of support
  • Signpost and assist others to access appropriate support in the community
